OBITUARY - Daily Examiner Grafton - Saturday Oct 9th 2004 Elsie Doris Dwyer (nee Lollback) / 15 Jan 1907 to 22 April 2004 The death has occurred in Sydney in her 98th year of Elsie Doris Dwyer, the youngest and last survivor of the 19 children of Jacob and Hannah Mary Lollback (nee Schipp). Sixteen of those 19 children grew to adulthood, the other three (including a set of twins) either died at birth or shortly after. The eldest child, Martin, died at the age of 24 years, three years and three months before Elsie's birth. Elsie was also the closest remaining relative of the two original Lallbach (later changed to Lollback) brothers and their wives, George and Magdalena and Jakob and Margaretha, who left Germany aboard the ship Helene' on October 16, 1852 and arrived in the Colony on March 18, 1853 to work for Edward Ogilvie at Yulgilbar Station as vinedressers. Her father Jacob was born to Magdalena on board the Helene on January 13, 1853 near Adelaide. George and Magdalena later gave the land on which the Catholic Church of St John of the Cross at Copmanhurst was erected, and it is also reputed that George was involved in its construction. Born in the original old house on the Lollback family farm at Palmers Island, Clarence River, Elsie attended the Convent school at Harwood Island walking three miles each way to and from school. Elsie was a talented pianist and on leaving school continued a musical association with the school for concerts and plays, and also a strong friendship with her former teacher Sister Coleman. As was the case in those days on leaving school young women were needed to carry out the domestic chores, especially in such a large family. As well as being on hand at milking time and preparing three hot meals a day, there were morning and afternoon snacks, and billycans of tea to be made and carried out to the men toiling at heavy manual work on the farm; clothes to be laundered by boiling in kerosene tins over a fire in the house yard, and later ironed with Potts irons heated on the fuel stove. At a picnic at Yamba on her 15th birthday Elsie met John Douglas (Doug) Dwyer, son of Jack and Margaret (Maggie) Dwyer of Shark Creek and later Palmers Island. On her 16th birthday Doug gave Elsie a gold watch, a precursor to their soon-to-be engagement. Elsie and Doug were married at St Dominic's Catholic Church Harwood Island on 28th July 1926 in a double wedding ceremony when the marriage of Elsie's elder sister May to Arthur Mahoney also took place. Elsie was 19, Doug 24. After their marriage Doug and Elsie moved to Sydney where Doug was employed on the Tramways, later transferring to the railways. Apart from short periods when Doug was transferred to Eltham and Nambucca Heads by the Railways they lived the remainder of their lives in Sydney, at Hurstville, and after 1940, at Beverly Hills. Doug retired due to ill-health in 1962 and until his death in September 1977 at the age of 75, the couple spent many happy years travelling all over Australia in their caravan. After her husband's death Elsie continued to live in her home at Beverly Hills. She liked playing cards and Scrabble, pottering in the garden and a weekly visit to her favourite club; she joined a travel club and made friends on the many bus tours she enjoyed. Although her health began to deteriorate in September 2003 she remained alert and in control of all her faculties. She was admitted to hospital one week before her death. She is survived by her three children, daughter Hannah (Plowman) of Jamberoo, and twin sons, Brian of Beverly Hills (formerly Byron Bay) and John (Forster), 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. xvii.
